History of Chechnya

Chechnya is currently a province of Russia. Its official name is the Chechen Republic. Chechnya is a republic of Russia, while Hong Kong is a republic of China. It is located in the southernmost part of Eastern Europe in the North Caucasus and within 100 km of the Caspian Sea. Grozny is the capital city of the Chechen Republic. The total area of the this republic of Russia is 17 thousand 300 square km. According to the census of 2010, the population of the Chechen Republic is 12 lakh 68 thousand 989 people. Most of them were Chechens and the rest were Russian minorities.

Although the Chechen Republic is a mountainous region in the North Caucasus, it is a geopolitically important region. Located very close to trade routes with Russia and Middle Eastern countries. Over the ages, various superpowers have fought to keep this province under their control.

Russia's first incursion into the region began in 1556 with the conquest of the Khanates of Kazan and Astrakhan by Tsar Ivan the Terrible's Golden Horde. Later, contemporary powers such as the Ottoman Empire of Iran and the Crimean Khanate invaded for control of the province and a long struggle ensued. In 1774, Russia strategically gained control of the Chechen province from the Ottomans.
